Claire Martin, Senior Meteorologist, CBC Newsworld, Vancouver, Canada Session Chair
Claire Martin started her professional career with the UK Met Office, and then from 1990-1996, after emigrating to Canada, she worked with Environment Canada as a meteorological technician/forecaster based out of Edmonton, Alberta. Martin received her undergraduate specialized degree in Meteorology from the University of Alberta in 1995. After spending six years with the government, she made the switch to full time TV weather presentation. She has gone on to win major broadcasting awards in both Canada and Europe. She currently appears nightly on the CBC flagship newscast "The National".

Gordon A. McBean, Professor and Director Policy Studies, Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, Departments of Geography and Political Science, The University of Western Ontario Discussant
Professor Gordon McBean, CM, PhD, FRSC is Director of Policy Studies, Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction at The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada where he has been since 2000 a Professor of Geography and Political Science. From 1994-2000, he was the Assistant Deputy Minister for the Meteorological Service of Environment Canada and Permanent Representative of Canada to the WMO. He was also an elected member of the WMO Executive Council. Prior to that, he was Professor of Atmospheric and Oceanographic Sciences at the University of British Columbia. He is a Member of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society and the American Meteorological Society. Among his many national and international activities are now Chair, Science Committee for the ICSU-ISSC-UNISDR Integrated Research on Disaster Risk program and Chair of START International. He previously Chaired the World Climate Research Programme.

He has an MS in Geoscience and a PhD in Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources.

Mario Sánchez Herrera is the Chief of the Press Office, National Meteorological Institute, Costa Rica. He has extensive professional experience in the communications field: External Affairs and Press Director, Costa Rica’s Science and Technology Ministry; Communication and Press Deputy Chief, Costa Rica’s President’s Office; PWS Regional Focal Point, Fourth Assessment Report WMO; Communications and Campaign Officer for Latin America and the Caribbean, WSPA ; Chief of Communication and External Affairs, National Meteorological Institute; CPA Regional Focal Point, Fourth Assessment Report WMO; and Coordinator, Professional Defense Committee, National Board of Journalists, Costa Rica. Mario has had a variety of teaching experiences as a professor of communications and public relations for the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Universidad Autónoma de Centro América and Universidad Latina de Costa Rica. He also taught journalists for the Alliance of Communicators for Sustainable Development and television weather anchors for the Fourth Assessment Report WMO. He holds degrees in communication and journalism from the Universidad de Costa Rica.

Uganda Discussant
Patrick Luganda is currently involved in a project to disseminate timely Seasonal Climate Forecast to farmers in various districts in Uganda. He is in charge of Agriculture Broadcast programs on Vision Voice and Bukedde Radio station in Kampala. He is the Uganda Media trainer for the International Women's Media foundation project on Reporting on Women in Agriculture in Africa. He is also the Chairman of the Network of Climate Journalists in the Greater Horn of Africa and has authored several papers on Climate, the Media and Society at numerous international conferences. He is a regular speaker at various important conferences, meetings and trainings concerning climate. He is a recognized consultant on the media, climate and science communication in general. Patrick Luganda is a commercial farmer with a passion for tree farming, piggery and poultry. He owns a farm on the banks of River Sezibwa near Sezibwa falls n Uganda where he practices what he preaches in the media.

Dr. Charlevoix manages the GLOBE Student Climate Research Campaign. GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science education program. Dr. Charlevoix is responsible for Climate Research Campaign program development and funding, recruitment for participation, coordination with GLOBE partners, educators and scientists, and facilitating the development of meaningful research alliances and partnerships.
